Generic Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is now available from Canada. If you are currently taking Xarelto® or have a new prescription for Xarelto®, the generic version of this medication, rivaroxaban is now available in Canada and is less expensive than the brand name medication. Generic versions of medications are the more affordable copies of the brand name drugs that have same active ingredient, strength, and intended use. Rivaroxaban is the generic ingredient of the brand Xarelto®. Health Canada has approved this generic medication for sale in Canada and now it is available from our Canadian pharmacy for use on all prescriptions that state Xarelto®.
Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is a direct oral anticoagulant or non-vitamin K antagonist or anticoagulant. Other medications that are similar to Xarelto include Eliquis® (apixaban) and Pradaxa® (dabigatran). These medications are alternatives to traditional anticoagulants like warfarin. Medications like rivaroxaban, apixaban, and dabigatran share similarities in the mechanism of action but have differences in dosing and specific clinical indications. That is, they are used for different medical conditions.
Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is used to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke. For example, Xarelto® is used for the following purposes:
1. Prevention or treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT
2. Prevention or treatment of Pulmonary Embolism or PE
3. Reduce the risk of a stroke or embolism if a patient has Atrial Fibrillation or in patients that have undergone certain surgical procedures.
Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) works by inhibiting the activity of a specific clotting factor called Factor Xa. This helps in preventing the formation of blood clots which can be dangerous if they travel to certain vital organs in the body such as the brain, lungs, or heart.
Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) tablets come in four strengths which are 2.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg. The strength of rivaroxaban tablets prescribed will depend on the condition you’re trying to prevent or treat. Xarelto® (rivaroxaban) is most often prescribed once daily but may be prescribed twice daily using lower doses.
